Long Valley is located between Sheung Yue River and Shek Sheung River and is a large piece of freshwater wetland with high ecological value. Unlike coastal wetland which is influenced by salty sea water, the freshwater wetland in the Long Valley Nature Park provides completely different habitats for water birds, amphibians and reptiles and other wetland animals, for them to rest, eat and make family. Before the development of the Long Valley Nature Park, the lands in Long Valley were mostly under private ownerships that it required the consent of the land owner for carrying out any conservation work. Moreover, some farmlands were abandoned while some were planted with incompatible plants such as bananas which degraded the wetland habitats.
The Government took the chance of developing the Kwu Tung North and Fanling North New Development Areas, which are parts of the Northern Metropolis, to resume the private lands in Long Valley and develop it into the Long Valley Nature Park for conserving and enhancing the ecological value of this important piece of freshwater wetland. The Long Valley Nature Park is also a mitigation for the ecological impact arising from development of the two New Development Areas.
The construction works of Long Valley Nature Park started in late 2019 by the Civil Engineering and Development Department and finished in 2024. Long Valley Nature Park has been managed by phases by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and has opened in November 2024.
Long Valley Nature Park is about 37 ha. It is divided into three management zones, namely the Visitor Zone (5 ha), Agriculture Zone (11 ha) and Biodiversity Zone (21 ha). The Long Valley Nature Centre is located on the other side of the Sheung Yue River.
